Those clumps of hair on the floor that you are constantly cleaning up…yep, pretty much every mom can relate to hair loss after having a little one…in fact, I have had hair loss at other points in life, too…they always have come during periods of high stress. They also came during times when I have been struggling most with my thyroid and adrenal issues. Anyway, I wanted to address a few ways that I have helped my post partum hair loss the second time around in hopes that it may encourage a few people and help you find some solutions for you, too! 🙂
NOW, let me back up and say that I had horrible hair loss with my first daughter. It came on suddenly when Everly was about 6 months old. It was so so bad…about half of my head and I DON’T have thick hair to start with. I started to take some random hair vitamins that I found at the grocery store, and it helped a bit. BUT, the clumps of hair falling on the ground went on and on until Everly was nearing 2. Anyway, over the course of the last few years, I have tested nearly just about everything for hair loss and thought that I would round-up what has worked for my hair. You may be experiencing post-partum hair loss, you may be experiencing extreme stress and thus having hair loss {I was there before having kids at various times}, or you may be a guy who doesn’t want to experience any more hair loss.
Before I dive in…I need to preface by saying that I am not a “HAIR” person…I am not that person that wakes up every morning and styles my hair…while I wish that I was…I simply don’t have the time right now! EEK…aka…minimal sleep, ten thousand things to do, and two little people that keep me busy 24/7. Just throwing it out there! 🙂 OK, now on to the tips:
- WASH LESS: Washing your hair every day strips it of its natural oils and thus your hair produces more OILS…thus oily hair and weighted-down hair {aka less volume and texture}. Use a shower cap if you are like me OR DRY SHAMPOO in between washings {This one works really well and this one does, too, and is full of amazing ingredients}…Praise Jesus for this miracle worker in between washes. In the summertime, I do wash more…like every other day…HELLO HUMIDITY. But in the wintertime, I go about 3-4 days without washing my hair. I personally have found that it helped my post-partum hair journey this time around. My husband washes his hair every day and has still noticed huge improvements with his hair by using SOME of the other below tips. Washing your hair less in general though is good for overall hair health.
- SLEEP ON A SILK PILLOWCASE: Not only is this good for your skin, {goodbye wrinkles} but it is also good for eliminating static from your hair. The last thing in the summertime that you want is your hair to be super static from all the summer dry heat or from the humidity really. I have lived in both climates and both types of summer heat do crazy things to your hair. Furthermore, silk does not absorb moisture like cotton does.
- SHAMPOO: I do think that shampoo can make or break one’s ability to go for a few days without washing your hair AND I know that it can help with hair loss. I have tried just about every shampoo out there from the very high end Kerastase brand to shampoos from CVS and Target. This Beautycounter shampoo has done wonders for me and for my HUSBAND, too! 🙂 It is also great for dry and sensitive scalps…just see the reviews🙂 Our hair is growing {both of us have actually experienced hair loss}, it’s soft, and it doesn’t leave your hair with residue. Furthermore, the ingredients are actually good for you…AKA…lots of nasty and harmful chemicals arnen’t entering your blood stream through your scalp. 🙂 We rotate between the Beautycounter shampoo, this Andalou shampoo, or this one. What I love about both of them is the ingredients but also the fact that they leave the hair feeling volumous.
- COLLAGEN: THIS IS A GAME CHANGER FOLKS…With my second daughter Isabelle, I have had SOME hair loss…I mean SOME…MINIMAL compared to what I experienced the first time around. But, at the same time, my hair is growing like crazy! I put collagen in my coffee every morning and afternoon. It’s rather tasteless…my husband thinks that it does affect the taste. WHATEVS…but our hair is growing. Collagen is good for your internal health as well as your skin, too! 🙂 You can get it at most health food stores, but good old Amazon has it, too! Travel size is available HERE, which is super easy when on the road.
- Put a MASK on your hair…now I don’t think that this helps with hair loss per se, but I do think that it helps with overall hair health. It deep conditions as well as gives your hair that extra moisture. I love this one, but honestly don’t love the ingredients. It’s the best one that I can currently find right now…I’m still searching for a non-toxic one! I’m hoping Beautycounter makes one soon! 🙂
- Take your Vitamins and Cod Liver Oils and DRINK BONE BROTH: A multi vitamin is great for you for all sorts of reasons. We like NEW Chapter found on Amazon. We also take Cod Liver Oil, which is SO good for so many reasons, including hair and eye health. Definitely have noticed a difference with hair loss when using the Cod Liver Oil. We also drink Bone Broth {love Bare Bones Beef Broth} and my husband and I both have noticed a huge improvement in overall health and hair growth when drinking a cup a few times a week!!
So, there you have it. I would say that the collagen, the shampoo, and the bone broth/cod liver oil really, really help the most with post partum hair loss. 🙂 If you all have any other suggestions, please do let me know!!! I would love to know!! Thanks so much for stopping by and I hope that you all have a great day! xo Christine
